Outstanding Volunteer Award

Many of you know Jean Bingham as a member of the ESLC staff. She is, but did you know that she is a volunteer? She started out volunteering with the ESLC seven years ago, tutoring two Afghani women. When we were in need, she stepped in to help, and helped out so much, that she is now considered as part of the staff! She teaches our Tutor Trainings, does tutor-student matches, teaches classes, does record-keeping in the office, and much more - all as a volunteer! This year Jean was honored by the State Refugee Office as an Outstanding Volunteer, and she received a plaque and a handmade bag made by Karen refugees from Myanmar. We agree that Jean is an Outstanding Volunteer, and are so grateful for her service!

ESLC's Extreme Makeover!

On September 10, the United Way's Day of Caring, the ESLC got an amazing makeover! The United Way hooked us up with some wonderful interior designers, donated paint, and a free paint crew! Also, two of our wonderful tutors, Steve and Elaine Barrus of Barrus Photography, donated professional photographs of our students. We love our new look! Stop by and check it out - you might even see a photo of yourself and your student!
Thank you to Steve and Elaine Barrus, the United Way, Kwal Paints for donating the paint, and Robert Pinon and MHTN Architects for all of your hard work!!

ESLC’s outreach programs are expanding throughout Salt Lake County, with a new Midvale program specifically targeted towards helping the area’s Latino population.

The class had registered 14 students and it's growing!

Other ESLC successes include our Empowering Parents program, which focuses on literacy classes for parents taught by our volunteers at the elementary school where their children attend school. Our Hartland Connection

Another summer has passed and we at the English Skills Learning Center are pleased to say that we succeeded in our time at Hartland - meaning that our students are succeeding!

At the beginning of summer we broke our classroom rooster into smaller English classes and the results are tremendous! Students have more confidence, they are seeking and obtaining employment, and with the help of Heather's classes they are navigating around the community with a little bit more ease and knoweldge of general directions!

Special thanks goes out to Kimberly Schmit and Ahmed Ali for hosting a great summer celebration and doing so much behind the scence coordination!

Anna, Lucy and a friend attended the volunteer picnic. Lucy was able to introduced herself and had small conversations with 8 different people and groups!
